Attention Arizona residents! The deadline for the Real ID is fast approaching and if you do not take action now, you will find yourself grounded from your next flight. All people who want to board a plane or enter a federal building must have a Real ID by October 2020.
What is the Real ID in Arizona?
In 2005, the United States congress passed the REAL ID Act. The goal of this act is to tighten identification that travelers use to fly with (or enter a federal building). Currently, the Arizona driver’s licenses are not compliant with the Real ID Act. Security and safety of the U.S. citizens was at the forefront of this new act.

In Arizona, the state legislature passed a law requiring a license or card holder to take steps to secure a Real ID. This new ID might be referred to as a REAL ID, Travel ID or Voluntary Travel ID. All of these names refer to this same type of identification.
There are still other forms of acceptable ID you can travel with. These other forms include:
- A passport
- U.S. Department of Defense ID
- Border crossing card
- DHS trusted traveler card
- Permanent resident card

How I get a Real ID in Arizona?
As the deadline is fast approaching (remember you are required by October 2020 to have a Real ID in order to board a plane or enter a federal building), you can imagine that many people are scrambling to the MVD to grab their new ID card.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t have to be you. There is no reason you need to suffer through extra long lines at the MVD. Instead, you can visit one of the many valley 1 Stop Title Loan locations to grab your ID.
To start the process, you must first begin an online application. Once that form has been completed, you must take documentation to a 1 Stop Title Loan locations. You will need the following to ensure you will receive a Real ID:
1 of the following proof of identity:
- Original Birth Certificate
- Current US Passport or Passport Card
AND 1 of the following proof of social security:
- Social Security Card
- W-2 form
- 1099 Form
- Paycheck stub
AND 2 other documents proving Arizona residency
- Utility bills
- Bank/credit card settlement
- Insurance policy
- Current Arizona license or registration with current address, etc.
Other Real ID considerations:
- Minors under the age of 18 are not required to have a Real ID, as long as their traveling companion has one
- All airports in Arizona will require the Real ID to travel
- Your new ID will be mailed to you
- Smile! You will need your picture taken at the time of application
- The MVD will have long lines, get your new card at 1 Stop Title Loans
You might not consider yourself the traveling type, however it is best to just be prepared. You never know if you need to make an emergency trip! The Real ID can take 7-10 days to be delivered, so you need to make the appropriate preparations far in advance. The Arizona Real ID will be good for 8 years, so take the time now to be in good standing with the TSA.
